HUEHUE x Mossery
2025
illustration, merchandise, collaboration
About
Mossery is a stationery company that specialises in customisable and reusable journal book covers. As a sponsor of HUEHUE Art Market, Mossery selected 30 artists to illustrate limited edition cover designs, reflecting diverse styles and personalities. This is my design: “A Nearby Clover Patch”.
Goal
Design a fully-illustrated journal cover that flows from front to back. It should reflect my artist brand but also be broad enough to appeal to a wide audience, for sale purposes.
Process
Sketch, linework, colour, shading and details.
Interview
As part of this collaboration, we were also interviewed about the process behind the cover.
Did you face any challenges or obstacles while creating the design? If so, how did you overcome them?
While creating the design, I had trouble coming up with what to draw. I wanted it to be true to the Sando universe, while not too specific, so it could inspire anyone who picks up the journal. In the end, I decided to reference what originally sparked Sando + Friends. All the stories I’ve told and items I’ve crafted come from a fictional town I created early on in my Sando journey. I hope this journal illustration similarly inspires its owner – write your own story, follow your own path, and explore your own little town hidden within a clover patch.
Are there any specific themes or messages you wanted to convey through the cover?
Let your mind wander. Little worlds are waiting to be explored; they’re right in front of your eyes – you just have to look deeper!
Are there any hidden details or symbolism in your design that you'd like to share with us?
The boat is a reference to one I drew earlier this year [2025], which featured my characters, Sando and Latte, sailing to discover new lands. It feels like a symbol of how far I’ve come as an artist and how there’s always more out there for me to experience. It also suggests this little clover patch town is a neighbour to the universe my art is set in, as if my characters are visiting.
What advice do you have for aspiring artists or creators who want to make their mark in the industry?
Explore world-building and storytelling in your art – use it as fuel for all your creations.
I think storytelling is something that helped me find my artistic style and bring more meaning to my work. Everything I create stems from the alternate universe in which Sando + Friends is set. It's the ‘why’ behind the colours I choose and the elements I repeat. It can transcend different mediums and make my art feel more alive.
Your storytelling doesn’t have to be complex. Sometimes I stray away from my usual ideas, as it’s completely okay to create something without a reason other than that you like it. But when I’m feeling uninspired, it’s comforting to have a concept to come back to that drives me to keep creating.
